Personal information

Bio
Beth Sheeler, MAPP, Elizabeth (Beth) Sheeler, is the founder of Prima Materia Studio and Broadlawn Farm, where she integrates positive psychology, mindfulness, design, hospitality, ritual, and craft to create meaningful experiences that foster connection and well-being. She holds a Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from the University of Pennsylvania and is a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Teacher in Training through Brown University School of Public Health. Through workshops, immersive gatherings, and thoughtfully curated collaborations, Beth translates research on human flourishing into practices that cultivate presence, gratitude, and deeper relationships with ourselves, one another, and the natural world. Broadlawn Farm serves as the living expression of this philosophy—a working landscape where stewardship, seasonal rhythms, and material intelligence inform both her creative practice and her approach to well-being. Grounded in the belief that beauty is a form of care and a catalyst for transformation, Beth's work invites people to slow down, reconnect, and create lives rich with meaning and intention.

Guerrilla Altruism: Maximizing Acts of Kindness for Well-being

While many studies have analyzed the effect of acts of kindness on the giver, much less attention has
been paid to the effects of these types of interactions on recipients. Even less research has been dedicated to what makes acts of kindness most potent to enhance recipients’ well-being. In this paper, I suggest that there may be an ideal “recipe” for acts of kindness to make the most impact to build positive emotions in individuals, and positive resonance in groups and communities. Utilizing ingredients such as art, beauty, creativity, surprise, and most importantly, a mysterious, rebellious edge, acts of kindness can be less about “randomness” and more about deliberate acts of altruism designed to promote well-being, so that recipients feel compelled to “pay it forward.”
